2008 TCI Festival of the Wagging Tails

PROUD dog owners and their faithful four-legged friends took to Turtle Cove Marina in Providenciales on Saturday to take part in the infamous Festival of the Wagging Tails.

The fourth annual dog show saw hundreds of people turn out to enjoy food, drinks, fun and games - and the chance to watch pets and their owners battle for top prizes.

The TCSPCA runs the event each year to raise money for animals in need of care.

This year fundraising efforts focused on setting up a low cost spay and neuter facility in Providenciales.

Terry Selver, president of the TCSPCA, said the goal of the venture is to decrease the cost of surgery and allow more pet owners the opportunity to neuter their animals.

“This is a very exciting project for the TCSPCA to undertake,” he said.

“It will allow more animals to be spayed or neutered and will centralise the operations making it easier for the public to access the service.”

During this Saturday’s fun-filled event canines battled it out it in competitions for best trick, most original potcake, looks most like owner, best at obstacle course, cutest tail, and best looking male and female.

The winners in each category then went on to compete for the top prize of best in show.

A delighted Cameron Thompson and his pup Polo, who earlier won the ‘most looks like owner’ category walked away with the esteemed prize.

Also proving himself in two categories was the very talented Casey, owned by Barbara and Bruce Trethewey, who won ‘best trick’ and ‘best at obstacle course.’

‘Most original potcake’ went to a beautiful black and white speckled pup owned by Ray called Brindi, and cutest tail went to tiny champion Brewster owned by Laura.

Best looking female was Flea, owned by Carole Klinko, and best looking male was Titi la Manta owned by Isabelle.

TCSPCA executive director Susan Blehr said the event, which helped to raise $17,000 for the TCSPCA, was a huge success.

She added a big thank you to the winner of the 50/50 raffle, Doris Pacittio, who very generously donated the winning amount of $580 back to the TCSPCA.

The TCSPCA continues to provide essential medical care and attention to all animals of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

All animals in distress are rescued and placed with volunteers to recuperate and fostering is done in private homes by volunteers.
